I am considering relocating to the wilmington area to teach. I am moving from Chicago and am not familiar with the area. Can anyone tell me which neighborhoods and surrounding cities are recommended to live in? I will be living alone and would like to make sure I'm in a safe (for what it's worth) area. Thanks!

Can you give us more info? Like renting or buying? Do you have a job offer and if so where? It's not just the neighborhoods, but the proximity to your place of employment. I assume you are female? There are many good, safe neighborhoods but its difficult to make any recommendations without knowing more. Also, "the Wilmington area" is divided up into the actual cities of Wilmington (actually a tiny portion of the overall area because the City of Wilmington hasn't annexed anything since shortly after the Civil War), Newark, New Castle (not much of a city, really), Elsmere (probably not to be considered) and many unincorporated suburbs (the bulk of the area).

Moving from the city or burbs? I'm Naperville born and relocated to Delaware 4 years ago from Gurnee.

Generally, if you want to be closer to nightlife, look in North Wilmington (Route 202/Concord Pike area). Safer, close to downtown Wilmington and a shorter trip to Philly. Newark is also safe and a college town. Moving south from I-95 Delaware turns more rural/country quickly. The Middletown area is much like Gurnee before the mall was built.

This forum help me when I moved here and I'd be happy to help. Delaware is a good place to live. Gino's East evens ships here

I don't know much about Wilmington. I can tell you that teaching jobs are highly competitive in Delaware. There are very high standards for teachers here. In order to have HQT status required by NCLB you have to pass the PRAXIS II for the subject area you plan to teach. You can find out more about the test on ets.org. Most districts prefer you have dual certification in a subject area and special education. Have you checked w/ dedoe yet about transferring your teacher certification here yet? I would do that first to find out what you need to do to be certified here. Then check out the school districts. I've heard good things about Brandywine. Good luck!
