Aha! That's were the sugar comes in, katreese! In south central PA, if it doesn't have sugar, dough, or fried, it's not a food group. ShooFlyPie is all sugar.

How about dumplings?.....we have slippery dumplings, and drop dumplings. Many restaurants serve chicken 'n dumplin's.....but one I know serves beef 'n dumplin's. I don't know if I'd like the beef dish.

And, somebody mentioned scrapple. That's homemade here...Rappa & Kirby & Holloway.

I'm updating my red beet eggs brine recipe.

Try

1/3 cup vinegar
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup sugar

and, of course, the beet juice.

Makes a sweeter, less rubbery product.

Delly, In PA our chicken pot pie is slippery dough. Everyone expects go get a crusted meat pie. Nope. It's a soup pot meal.

I stopped rolling homemade dough several years ago. There's a product called Annie's Dumplings in the frozen food section. I think they have it at Safeway. It's just as good as homemade, and no work at all. It's not like drop dumplin's. It's sorta like 3 inch square noodles.
