(and there are many things)

I had to get a clasp repaired on a necklace today. Took it into a small shop in Middletown that's only open 3 days a week. As it was being repaired, I realized I had only a credit card with me and the shop only takes cash/credit.

I asked if I could leave the necklace there and return to pay this afternoon. The proprietor told me to take the necklace with me, "it's only $2," and to come back and pay it when I had a chance.

That would NEVER have happened in Northern Virginia, where we lived before. I promptly repaid him this afternoon.

Our mechanic here in Slower/Lower is cash only. Had a job involving part of the hydraulic clutch inside the transmission.. He was supposed to let me know when he got it torn apart as we agreed other parts might be replaced.2 days later he called to pick truck up. Had all the parts in a pile. Take the truck and check it out. Dropped off the $500 and some a few days later. Just a laid back way of doing things down here.

From the other side of the fence, what seems peculiar to me, is.....

That this way of doing business is a topic of conversation. Having never lived anywhere else but Delaware, this is the way things have always been done, sometimes even on a larger scale.

In the late 60's we bought a 165 acre farm for $42,500, with a $1.00 down. The contract was written on the back of an old envelope while we were standing in the middle of the field; we clipped the dollar bill to the envelope/contract and shook hands. We moved in that day, went to the bank the next day and the bank cut a check, which we hand carried back to the seller. Life was even more simple then.

All I have ever known is Delaware, and I've lived most of my life in eastern Sussex. My local mechanics (actually have two I use right in my area) will squeeze me in even if they're very busy, and they have worked on my car and/or truck and charged me nothing on more than one occasion--small repairs, but repairs nonetheless. This is a way of life that I would never take for granted, and I remind myself how lucky I am on a daily basis .

Us, too!
We get our tire pressure checked, questions answered such as "what's that noise" ???? and even have them test ride our vehicle if we're concerned about something. Never a charge. Of course, every 2-3 months we take them a box of donuts and/or pizza. (so you could say, Delaware is so far behind the times that "bartering" is still in existence) LOL
