Ok folks. I'm heading to Havelock, NC and google says 1 to 13, to 17 is the shortest route ( 882 miles, 16 hours from Maine), but with summer traffic, is it going to be the slowest?

I would be driving it Thursday from 9am thru 6pm at night.

The route I normally take is 84 to 81 to 95 and is 1014 miles but only 17 hours, and I'm on light traffic highways. It is an hour longer, but I'm wondering if it's an easier hour, or if the coastal route is fine (65 MPH+-) and nice roadways?

I'll be return the next morning the next day, and traveling this area from 3am thru 2pm.

From I-95, Route 1 is 4-lane tollway to Dover and then Route 13 will be 4 lane, but it is NOT a limited access road. You will be driving through each town, complete with stop lights, etc. On a Thursday you should find it a very easy drive until you reach I-64 in Norfork. The two times I've been on Rt 17 have also been an easy drive. Friday beach traffic can be a real mad-house through DE however.

My personal opinion, I would make the trip through DE/Norfork and keep my blood pressure at normal levels. I'm not sure you can save anytime travelling this route, but you avoid the DC Beltway and the mess I95 is between DC and Richmond. Plus there are nice places to stop and eat too. Peggy's north of Greenwood, DE serves a killer breakfast and near the Bay Bridge-Tunnel is The Great Machipongo Clam Shack.

Thank you. Base on your response and others I've received I think for this trip (Time is a BIG issue), I'm going to take 95, 84, 81, 95, 795, 70 into New Bern. It's a bit longer, but almost all highway, and with the exception of 95, easy traveling at 70+ MPH.
