They have a unique sound down here. I don't want to promote any bands, but there are two here in Dallas that Start with A. Even if you don't like metal, these guys are worth seeing. Austin has their own, all the girls think this one vocalist is so cute, but off stage without makeup and his girdle.. he is just an average chubby guy. But they are amazing performers and have great music.

Texas always had a huge underground metal scene. Hip hop not so much.
Im curious to know which bands youre talking about. Im a huge metalhead. And Dallas easily has one of the best metal scenes in the country. Different metal scenes around the country have unique sounds. San Francisco Metal is Gore Metal (Exhumed, Vile, Deeds of Flesh), Tampa metal is old school (Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel), Washington DC metal is political (Dying Fetus, Misery Index), Chicago Metal is like Black Metal/Death Metal Fusion (Disinter, Usurper). Dallas Metal is a combination of Death Metal and Hardcore. The link below is a band from Dallas that I think captures the Dallas sound pretty well.

YouTube - The Destro "Beast Burden"

Very technical (especially double bass technical), very heavy, very fast.

By the way Cupcake, I notice from your signature that perhaps you are a Children of Bodom fan? God Bless the Finns and all that wonderful Gothic/Black Metal they give us!

One thing thats always surprised me about Houston is that their metal scene is virtually dead. However, they do have some good alternative bands that came out of there.

Dallas has one of the best Techno/Trance scenes in the country. Dallas also has an amazing metal scene. For both genres, Dallas is easily the best in the Southern states (save Miami on Techno). Im very big into Techno/Trance and you can open the Dallas Observer and find a club hosting varios DJ's almost every night of the week, month in and month out.

However Dallas is a far cry from Houston and Atlanta when it comes to hip hop and rap. Ive listened to alot of rap from Dallas and frankly its not very good. When compared to Houston's rappers, its not very good. It seems like alot of the stuff Ive heard from Dallas rappers is usually repetitive and focus more on the beats than the rap itself. Dont get me wrong, there are a few decent rappers from Dallas. Dallas might be up and coming with hip hop, but I dont know.
You mean to tell me that you can't find the lyrical depth to "Do Tha Stanky Leg" ?!

When I first heard that song, I thought, "Great, another crap Atlanta dance song." When I heard the artists were from Dallas, I had to call my friend in Oak Cliff (who is a serious hip-hop head) and rag on him mercilessly, becUse he was always calling lamenting the artists coming out of Atlanta lately.

To the OP, the posters are right. Houston has a much more prolific hip hop scene if you're into that. Even when I lived in Mississippi, I heard lots of Houston-based rappers and learned to love Chopped-and-screwed mixtapes. The Dallas scene has some catching up to do, but you may come here and probably get into the scene a bit easier.

I think every city has to be honest with itself about what good musical scenes it has and what it doesnt do so well. As I mentioned, Dallas has an amazing Techno/Electronica/Trance scene as well as a great metal scene. Dallas has a subpar rap scene. Unfortunately it seems like a stigma for the 4 or 5 good rappers there are from here (Big Tuck, Tum Tum, and Lil Wil are decent enough). I think if they came out of Houston, they probably would have gotten more attention, but since they are from Dallas, no one pays them any mind.
