I recently used Garland Insulation to top up my 30 year old house from 5 1/2" (the old 1978 code) to 11". My house is about 1900 sq. ft. and I paid them about $400.00. They did a really good job and we can really feel a big difference!

My friend Jon is an independent honest re modeler and licensed electrician. I plan on replacing my old Federal Pacific (Federal Pathetic actually) panel with a new GE 200 amp service soon and we plan on using Jon. If he asks, tell him Korel sent you.

Would you mind asking Jon how much he charges for upgrading an old FPE 125 amp to 200 amp service? It's in the garage, overhead service, meter base is on the opposite side of the wall.

Thanks!
Jake

11" - is that about R38? For what it's worth, I believe R49 is the DOE recommendation for our area. 1900 sq ft, upping it by almost 6" for $400 seems like a very fair deal.

$400 is a great deal for upping it 6 inches.

Well, it was a few years ago and that's exactly what we plan on doing. You best call him yourself but I remember the price then was gonna be around $2,300.00. And that was a five year old price so it could be higher. I need two more 220 volt circuits. One for a Hot Tub Spa in the backyard and the other for my Garage work shoppe. Each situation is different so that's why it better you just call somebody. I haven't spoke to Jon in a year or two. I can tell you he is a good guy. I use to do plans for him when he was building new homes in Coppell.

To answer the other post regarding my attic insulation, yes we upped it to R38 (11") which was a big improvement. I have been thinking a calling them back and doing another 6" or more. The price was a real cheap fix for a HOT house! And a great Return on Investment! Now that was a price from about 5 years ago so I would expect it to be a little higher.

Also since then we changed out the old clunker of an AC unit for a 16 SEER Trane (would have gone 18 SEER but they want another dozen pints of my blood ). The 107 degree day we had yesterday was putting a strain on all of us. I called my AC guy and after making a few suggestions, I placed a mister-fan next to my outside unit and that made a world of difference inside. Most residential ACs are not sized for times when the air outside gets up to 107. We could have gone with another half ton unit and spent more bucks for those few days the outside temp gets way up there.
