I'm not afraid of suburbs, but we'd like to rent a house for a year and figure out where to buy. Job is in Carollton/Farmer's Branch area. We homeschool, so the school system doesn't matter, but I'd like someplace with parks, recreation stuff, families, diversity, and maybe proximity to Trader Joe's? Kids are all elementary age, but like I said, we're homeschoolers.

Also, we have a corgi.

Suggestions on where to live? I appreciate it. The idea of moving to such a HUUUUUUUGE place like Dallas kind of blows my mind. I don't even know where to start and if we get one trip there to figure out the relo situation, we'll be lucky!

A lease home can be hard to find but anywhere in the North Dallas area... Carrollton, Richardson, Plano, Lewisville, Farmers Branch.

There are a lot of people moving here looking for a lease home. Occupancy rates and rents are up.

Most of the towns have pretty good resources as far a community centers and parks. Since you home school, look for a rental in North Carrollton. West Plano is also very nice and not too terrible a drive. Coppell or Valley Ranch would really be great. As Rakin indicated, the challenge is finding the right rental, almost all communities have what you want.

Beautiful parks in Farmer's Branch. Beautiful. Our kid ice-skates at the rink there, and on nice days we go along and do picnics. The old-timer folks are fighting hard to hang on.

Heading a little rough in some areas, but since you are doing Home School, not so big a deal.

The area is in a battle to not rent to illegals, as it is next to a collapsing post-industrial-now becoming hooker/drug/illegal section of Dallas.

In general, what you need to know is that Dallas itself is/has Cancer. That which touches it is at risk. Generally the further out to the north is considered better.

btw, Welcome, and good idea on renting the first year.

What's your budget for the house?

There will be a Trader Joe's in Plano soon. The Fort Worth location is already open. (Personally, I have yet to see the fascination with TJ...but that's another story...)

Yes, please do live as close to work as you can. Carrollton is pretty large in land size, so depending on where your job actually is in the city will determine what suburbs or even Far North Dallas areas to consider.

THIS. Carrollton is so large of a land mass that the appropriate neighborhood recommendations could range from a north Dallas neighborhood that is south of LBJ up to Plano and over to Flower Mound or Coppell.

Plus, need your budget. Makes a big difference.

Nearest Trader Joe's is in Plano and so are Whole Foods, Sprouts, Market Street, Central Market and anything else you'll ever need. Unfortunately there aren't many single family homes offering lease there and prices are high. Some parts of Carrollton are good so with no concern for schools & resale you can stay there. Castle hills, Bent Tree, Colony and Lewisville may work as well.
