Hello,

I am in my mid twenties and looking to transition from working at a bank into teaching math at a public school in the D/FW area. I graduated with a 4.0 in Sociology and was awarded several scholarships/fellowships. However, math was my favorite subject and it is what I would like to teach.

I know I can pass the Math 4-8 test. I'd prefer to teach grades 7 and 8 and possibly get the additional stipend that may accompany teaching secondary math. But am I likely to secure a job next summer with that certification? Or is high school math only in high demand?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm having trouble identifying how the hiring freezes/budget cuts are affecting the demand for math teachers and whether middle school math teachers are in demand. I'd like to have better answers to these questions before enrolling in an alternative certification program.

Thanks so much,
Alex

There is no demand for teachers, really. Especially alt cert teachers. There are tons of traditionally certified and prepared teachers that take precedence over alt cert. Don't waste your time.

While it is hard to secure a teaching job in mathematics, they are available. I was in a similar situation to you last year (except I have experience and am a mathematical specialist). I received several interviews in the area and ultimately placed with my top choice.

Regarding a job, your best bet may be to look into the private schools in the area as certification is not always required. That said, you may have trouble since you have only a mathematics interest and not a formal mathematics education or training in education.
