There's an area called the "L-Streets" in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas proper. You can get nice homes in the 1100-1600 sq ft range for $170-240K. It offers well built homes with some character, good proximity to Downtown/Uptown yet would allow you to keep your costs from getting out of control.

Then again, everyone here is assuming you want to buy a home. If you aren't planning to stay for 5+ years, I would strongly recommend not buying and instead just renting. Lots of areas that on that income, you could not only have a nice apartment or rented home, but also be near the action and even be able to put at least 10% away into a 401K.

I would not recommend thist AT ALL!!!!!

$150K for a TOWNHOUSE in a FAR flung former cow pasture rural area that has one congested highway to get anywhere in the Dallas area......... NO WAY! Buying a townhouse in the burbs of Dallas is a VERY BAD financial move. As long as you have zilch plans of ever selling the place it might work out for you. Otherwise, not a happening place for a single person nor is that a wise financial move for someone single or married.

To the OP, stay as close to Dallas as possible for resale. If you're going to buy a townhome or condo, you better buy in Uptown, Turtle Creek, and maybe downtown and Knox-Henderson. Otherwise, you're not getting your money back. Also, single-family homes in Dallas appreciate at much higher rates, but they have a much higher buy-in as well. Dallas is where any of the restaurants and shopping worth going to are located.
NO KIDDING! I in all honesty could NEVER recommend that anyone buy a townhouse in ANY suburb of Dallas no matter how low the price is.

The OP needs to stick to the actual city of Dallas and stay a LOT closer in to all the action and be in a much better position for resale.

OP, have you decided on Dallas or ATL?

An income of 85,000 dollars would give me what kind of lifestyle in Atlanta for a single person??

Ahhh, well I don't know anything about Miami, but I grew up in ATL and now live in Dallas. ATL and DAL are very, very similar cities and 85k will treat you quite well in each.

The biggest change for me has been the relative lack of trees and hills here in Dallas as well as lack of access to the N Ga Mountains (we have some in Ok, but they aren't quite the same, close, but not really the same feel. As far as social scene, quality of housing, ect both cities are pretty much the same with a small flare here and there. ATL is most certainty a bigger foodie city then Dallas.

Miami has a much higher cost of living than Dallas. Im sure you can live fine on 85k there but in Dallas your money would go a lot farther. I love Miami though and miss the water in Florida. (I lived in Florida for 14 years)

I'd say if you have the choice between Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami, I would pick Miami hands down. You are young and there is much going on in South Florida, from awesome beaches to nightlife on South Beach, to scuba diving in the Keys, I would think for someone just out of college you'd want to experience life.

Now, once you get married, have kids, etc... then Atlanta/Dallas would be great options. But there's just so much to do in Miami, and you have the whole Caribbean at your fingertips.
