Just wanted to report back that after tons of on-line research and lots of reading and posting on this forum, I finally got out to see DFW over the weekend. I really liked Dallas!
Thanks to those of you who advised me on ideas of locations to look, without that I don't think I would have gone to the right places and may have only explored the suburbs. Which are very nice but maybe not the right fit for our family.
I think many of those areas surrounding White Rock Lake would be really excellent options for us. Very pretty, well kept and the people we met were friendly. It was also helpful to me that there is an election coming up because the yard signs gave me a feel for some areas where possible concentrations of democrats live. We are more to the left of center and would love to live in an area where some like minded folks live. I saw more democrat signs on the east side of WRLake and scattered in other areas like Hillside and Old Lake Highlands. I spent Friday, Sat, and Sunday driving around with my friend who lives in DFW. We looked at rentals, went to open houses, toured the design district (I am a designer), went to natural food grocery stores, and ate at great restaurants. We covered a LOT of ground and ALL of your tips were so very helpful, thank you for the direction CityData friends!

Thanks! It was "cool" in the 90s on Sat but I got a taste of the "real thing" on Sun with 107 heat. I was not too bugged by it though. Having too much fun looking at houses. So much to see!
