Dang!
I'm a Nam-era vet and never knew we had a national day!
I never ended up in Nam, but that was only due to the random stuff that happen in the Navy. I was in a critical rate, trained in San Diego, but since I had never been east of Denver in my life, put in for duty on the east coast when given the choice. Ending up in Nam never crossed my mind when I made it; I just wanted to see the other side of the country.
I have a lot of friends who went to Nam, though. A lot. The Idaho National Guard was only one of 2 units who all went there at the same time as a unit, and came back home at the same time as a unit. I came very close to enlisting in the Guard, but I wanted to see the world, so I joined the Navy instead. And I actually did get to see a lot of it, but never got close to the Tonkin Gulf.
While I appreciate the 'thought' behind a Vietnam Veterans Day, I'm not sure that war alone should be singled out for such recognition. I realize that we were not very well respected (at the time), and I understand the desire to make up for that in some way. But we already have a day set aside to do just that, as well as honor all vets from all wars (Veterans Day). And much has been done in recent times to give Vietnam Vets recognition. But if we are going to have a veterans day for a specific war, then we need to have one for every war we've fought.
