If you plan on mixing milkshakes at Dairy Queen 40 hours a week you're right, it'll be tough to make ends meet. If you have no job skills, it's doubtful you'll get paid much. What kind of job experience do you have? Education?

How do you come up with $468/mo? $5.85 x 40 hr/wk = $234/wk, so $468 every 2 weeks, not every month. I'd bet if you have any job skills at all you'd make more than that. I'd also bet at least 1 bank in town is looking for tellers. If you could do that, you'd be above minimum wage, maybe not by alot, but at a job where benefits were offered.

Well, as far as the classifieds go, I hope that isnt the best the town has to offer. I remember someone here saying something to the effect of, 'there are 30,000 people in Cookeville, and 30,000 jobs.' (not literally of course) And the city-data site says, "Workers who live and work in this city: 8,958 (79.0%)" So thats pretty good right?

If you've been a department manager at KMart, I'm sure that means you would get paid more than minimum wage.

But remember, no one is guaranteed a job. There are over 30,000 jobs in Cookeville, but that doesn't mean there are 30,000 job openings. The newspaper doesn't have every job opening, of course, but it gives an idea of what's out there. Online job sites have a few, and employment agencies are usually a good way of getting a job.

Have you checked KMart's web site to see if there are jobs available at their Cookeville store? Or other retailers such as Wal-Mart, Dollar General, etc.? The two largest employers in town, the university and the hospital, advertise job openings on their own web sites and not in the newspaper. Same goes for other large employers such as Averitt Express (which is expanding). It seems that most restaurants also don't advertise in the paper whenever they need servers, dishwashers, etc. It's best to apply in person in such cases.
