My husband, two little girls and I are going to be moving to the Hartford area this August. We are looking to rent. Patrick is completing a pre-doc internship in E. Hartford(3dys/wk) and Middletown (2dys/wk).

Does anyone have any suggestions on a safe and yet affordable place to live?

Like I said he has to commute to two areas and we have little kids. We are coming from Pittsburgh PA so we are not too familiar with the area. I grew up in Tolland, but left at age 10 so I don't remember much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Tara

There are a lot of nice areas to live between Middletown and East Hartford. Towns like Wethersfield, Rocky Hill and Cromwell are very nice with good schools. They also have a number of rentals. Not sure what your price range is but you can check the Hartford Courant or Craigslist for listings.

Middletown is also nice but their upper grade level schools are great. Same is true about East Hartford schools. Middletown has a lot of rentals in the West Lake area which is right off I-91. Great location to commute from. Do not go south of downtown Middletown though. Route 9 has several traffic lights that make commuting through this area difficult. Hope this helps. If you give us an idea of what you want (size, price range, etc.) we may be able to help more. Jay

IMO...try Cromwell or Glastonbury, CT.
Renting may be more costly in Glastonbury tho.
Both easy commutes to E.Hartford & Middletown.

Glastonbury is a great town. One of the Hartford area's top suburbs with great schools and some nice shops, restaurants and parks. There are a lot of family oreiented things to do here. That said, it is more expensive, but there are several apartment complexes and condos for rent here. Check it out if it is within your budget. Jay

Yes, any of those towns mentioned above are good. Rocky Hill would be a good area between East Hartford and Middletown. I live in East Hartford on the Glastonbury line. if you rent in East Hartford stay by Glastonbury line. I would avoid Burnside Ave area or Main St. in East Hartford for sure. I think you'll find there are many places to choose from in all those towns mentioned so far. Glastonbury is nice but quite expensive. Good luck! Anymore questions about East Hartford feel free to write
