This summer we will be relocating to CT from W PA, work will be in New Haven. I have kids in grade school and need to know what the best districts/schools around might be. Distance should be at most 45 min drive from New Haven, closer of course is fine. TIA

Avon and Simsbury are highly regarded, as is West Hartford.

Around New Haven you will get a good school district in Milford, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Cheshire. I am sure I am forgetting some. Stay away from West Haven, and Hamden is good if you are in the northern end closest to Cheshire (Mt. Carmel area).

There are also two Regional Schools Districts that are highly regarded: Region 13 (Durham Middlefield) and Region 5 a/k/a Amity (Bethany Woodbridge).

As a REALTOR®, this subject is off limits.

Default Chieck out these websites

We have been looking at schools as well. The best wwebsites we have found are GreatSchools.net and Schoolmatters.com. GreatSchools has a place to find out what people really think about the schools and School matters does a pretty good job of looking at the facts and figures. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the sites, I will check them out. In the past I have been to a great site about schools but I can not recall what it was and have done several searches with no luck. Maybe one of these will be it!

Default I'd stay away from Milford...

I moved here last summer from NJ. I did a lot of research and everything I could find about Milford online seemed positive.

I am so glad I decided to rent before purchasing a house here. I doubt we'll be staying in Milford, one reason being the school system. I guess it's OK from an academic standpoint, but the powers that be at the Board of Ed seemed to have made poor decisions and imo, the whole district is screwed up. Mathewson, the school my children go to, is *extremely* overcrowded, But instead of building a new school like they really need to do, they are slapping a bandaid on the situation by sending the next 2 year's worth of kindergartners to Pumpkin Delight, where my littlest one attends pre-K because he is special needs. Problem with their new plan is it will now displace the pre-K. Solve one problem, create another.

Also, I find the school system to be stingy with their tax dollars, taxes here are much higher than the area I came from in NJ and I never had a problem there. It really leaves me questioning where all the tax dollars are going to. Perhaps higher salaries for the very same people who are making the poor decisions.

To sum up, imo, poor planning and poor budgeting here.
