Hi question looking at these towns as a possible move.

We like Oxford and Thomaston for their low taxes.

So right now work in Bridgeport and New Haven. Wife works in Wolcott but can change jobs and is considering it depending where we move to.

The only plus with Thomaston is most homes are under $200K. Where the rest of the town's everything is $225K or higher.

Any preferences for these towns?

Beacon Falls feels too small size wise but offers easy access for us for work & family. Seems to have more opitions for newer constructions.

Appreciate the feedback.

For commuting to Bridgeport, New Haven and Wolcott, I would say Prospect may be your best. It is a little over 30 minutes straight down Route 69 to New Haven and up it to Wolcott. You could also get over to Route 8 to get down to Bridgeport in just over 30 minutes.

I personally like Oxford the best but that is just me. I also like Seymour but it is not on your list. Beacon Falls is also okay. I would not recommend Thomaston since it puts you further from Bridgeport and New Haven. Just don’t see an advantage other than maybe price. In real estate though, location is everything. Jay

I live in Thomaston and it is a great town, but a commute to New Haven would be awful. There's no direct route and it would be on the crowded back roads. Bridgeport is okay as it is a straight shot down route 8.

Beacon Falls is probably the best value for you given the housing costs and convenience to both route 8 and the back roads to New Haven.

The commute from Thomaston to NH is terrible - I did Watertown-NH for a year or so and it consistently took more than an hour, on crummy back roads for more than half of the trip.

Of the towns you mentioned, Oxford is the most desirable but is also the most expensive. You’re looking at 300k + for a modest starter home there. If you’re looking for something ~200k, Oxford isn’t your town.

I second Jay’s mention; you should seriously be looking at Seymour.

If you work in New Haven and Bridgeport, I can’t fathom why you’d even consider a town as far north as Thomason. It’s about 40 minutes north of the southernmost town you’re considering (Oxford).

About an extra 20 minute commute
If we did Seymour have to be $170K or less home

Thomaston is a little more than an extra 20 minute commute.

Why would you have to lower your budget if you look at Seymour? Taxes?

He is smart. He is probably figuring in the extra gas of the commute and wear & tear on the car for the extra 20 miles. The average person won't think about that but a really smart person will.

My dad owned a delivery business. When I told him I was buying a house in Trumbull* instead of Fairfield because it is cheaper he replied "are you sure". I said of course the house is $50,000 cheaper. He said "really, let's figure out what the extra miles will do to your cars and budget".

Don't forget we will probably be having tolls now to add to the cost of the commute.

*My husband and I both worked in Stamford when we bought our house.

Except that his commute from Seymour would be shorter than a Thomaston, Oxford and Beacon Falls. Jay

Seymour isn't a USDA Zoned area so have to look into FHA loans.

Will admit I do really like Plymouth. Taxes are middle of the road. You get more square footage for lower cost. Only 5 extra miles.
