No Connecticut hotel overlooks the ocean, they overlook Long Island Sound.

I prefer the Saybrook Point Inn to Madison. You see the river, the sound, the lighthouses and the boat traffic is interesting. Downtown Saybrook is a little bigger than Madison and has more restaurants, Aspen is terrifi and even funky places like The Monkey Farm serve pretty good food.

The Water's Edge in Westbrook is more of a resort setting, it has a spa (so does SPI) and the hotel sits up on a hill and the Sound views are very nice.

About 40 miles closer to Mass. than Madison is the legendary Ocean House in Watch Hill CT, which affords the best ocean views between Boston and New York. Amost on the CT border, Ocean House is a trip back in time, though thoroughly modernized, with some of the best restaurants in the area on site. If you are looking for a getaway to write, I think this elegant old world hotel, the setting, and the water views will inspire you. The only con -- it's a bit pricey.

The Ocean House (Watch Hill, RI across the river from Pawcatuck, CT) is beautiful but very pricey. I think its sister property - The Weekapaug Inn located a few miles away, has more reasonable rates. It is just steps from the beach behind the dunes.
