Exactly. 10 above/below normal is strong for our region. 15 above/below is impressive. 22 above/below and its pretty much looking at records.

11am.. Still under 1/2 Mile visibility.

Without all the you know what hype about "it's the warmest month globally" again, I do wonder what it's like in the rest of the world right now. I know Alaska has actually been quite below normal and that map you show seems to suggest the western half of the US will be well below normal Christmas Eve/Day so it kind of evens out. I know last year the western half had record warmth during our record cold for example.

By definition winter and to a lesser extent the parts of spring and fall right after/before winter especially are "streaky" where summer is not so much and is more consistent. In a similar vein tropical climates have much smaller temperature deviations from average from the rest of the world. It's one of those "climate is more complex than it's made" things that is why I only partially buy into global warming.

.
Right...Not sure globally, but you can almost bet if we are warm the west and Alaska is cold. If we are cold , they are warm. Its the way it always is. But this warmth will be record setting. Interesting how we said the same thing last year the other way. Once in a lifetime weather happens two consecutive years the opposite way.

Now accuweather long term is showing colder (normal temps after Jan 1) ...Maybe January has a chance after all.

Funny, latest GFS just flipped and shows the Jet stream south of us after Christmas. wonder if they are that fast or maybe I didn't see last nights run.

BTW ...

Snow & Cold in Mexico. (Yes the country)

Snow & Cold "in the Summer" in Argentina.

Snow & Cold in the West (Feet for the mountains)

Snow & Cold in Kansas yesterday. More pics and video

The Planet is big, lets not be naïve and ignore where it is cold and snow just because locally or regionally it's been above normal.

Were stuck under the ridge just like the Western U.S was for years. Is it our turn now?

Yea..well it changed rather suddenly. They seem to be on it this year. The old long terms were a joke..not anymore.
