I was going to post this. I have to say I’m surprised by this. They were founded in Manchester and I believe own the buildings, the old Cheney Silk Company headquarters and mill, they are in. The new space will be flexible open concept which I believe means they’ll go to a Work-From-Home work format. I know a number of people that work there. Not sure they will like this. Will see.

Washington Prime, the owners of Manchester’s massive Plaza at Buckland Hills on Pleasanr Valley Road want a zone change for the remaining 57 acres they own behind the plaza over the town line in South Windsor. The zone change would allow them to construct 684 apartment units.

The owner says there is no market for more retail or commercial space so residential is the only viable development possible on the land. Can’t argue with that, though nearby South Windsor residents will beg to differ. It will be interesting to see what happens.

That’s great news. It shows that the market in Hartford is still very strong. The RPI campus will be a great location. Good news.

An innovative grocery store is about to open in Hartford’s impoverished Frog Hollow neighborhood. In the works for two years, The Grocery on Broad, near the Fire by Forge restaurant in Hartford’s Frog Hollow, is offering shoppers the opportunity to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy and ingredients to make meals. Prices will be discounted based on individual and family income, and can be combined with other low-income subsidies such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It is hoped that the model will work in other neighborhoods where buying nutritious food and meal ingredients such as rice, beans and other grains is a challenge.

A family of four with annual income of $90,000 or less could qualify for a 25% discount. The same-size family earning less than $67,500 in annual income could qualify for a 50% discount. If a potential customer doesn’t meet income guidelines, a membership still carries a 3% discount. Walk-ins off the street also will be welcome but would pay full price.

The grocery, operated in partnership with Connecticut Foodshare, is opening with the innovative use of a $142,000 Hart Lift storefront grant, a program funded with federal pandemic relief funds. Hart Lift seeks to revitalize vacant storefronts throughout the city and also was instrumental in the opening of Fire by Forge, the former Firebox, a year ago.

A former dental laboratory building on Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield will be renovated into a 40 to 50 vendor mall. The mall will be used by local craftsmen and artists to sell their goods. It will feature arts, crafts, clothing and home decor. Sounds nice.
