Last time, I tried this (I couldn't actually move in, don't get me started) I realized I couldn't take my Uhaul on the West Side Highway too late and ended up spending an hour driving down Broadway from 181st to 43rd. Not fun.

Any ideas on a better way to go that will allow Uhauls? I looked at the NYC map and it looks like 95 to 278, then down through Queens, then across the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, then across Manhattan from East to West.

I'm doing it tomorrow morning, so I imagine this trip will take me a good 3 hours, but I gotta do what I gotta do I guess.

95 to 9A (Westside highway), just before you go over the GW Bridge. It will not take you 3 hours - lol.

I was going to take West Side Highway last time, but it doesn't allow trucks.

You will have to pay extra toll, but this route will allow you to mostly avoid city traffic and non truck parkways like the West Side Highway Take 95 across the GW, head south on 95, then exit at Lincoln Tunnel to return to the city. Left on 10th Ave up to Hell's Kitchen.

Alternately, to avoid the Cross Bronx -- which can be a nightware -- I would take 95 to the Cross Westchester. Exit onto 87 South. Exit onto 95 headed to GW. After the bridge, ead south on 95, then exit at Lincoln Tunnel to return to the city. Left on 10th Ave up to Hell's Kitchen.

Go north on Third Avenue and turn right on East 124 Street. At the intersection with Second Avenue, straight ahead is the entrance to the Triborough/Kennedy Bridge. Go up that ramp and after the toll, stick to the left lanes and follow the signs for route 87. Then you will see the signs for New Haven, follow them until you get on 95 and then its a smooth sailing from their all the way to Connecticut.

You will pay two tolls, the first one for crossing the Triborough/Kennedy Bridge (this will be the more expensive one) and the other one on 95 in Westchester County.

The trip should take about 40-50 minutes. At least it does to me when I come back to CT via this way.

Leave at 10AM.

You don't have many options in a truck. 95 > 278 (RFK Bridge), get right off since FDR doesn't allow trucks. Go down 2nd ave all the way. Pick a well traveled side street to go westward once you get down there.

It's actually the smaller side streets that get plugged up really bad. 42nd street, for instance, has a lot of traffic, but at least it moves steady.

That should take no longer than an hour as long as you don't hit some crazy traffic.

Thanks a lot guys! I don't to have to cross Manhattan only to run into the buzzsaw that is the Lincoln tunnel. I don't really know traffic patterns so I think the shortest is way probably the best. And the winner is:

Stamford, CT to W 42nd St - Google Maps
Unfortunately I can only move in 9 am to 12 pm so I have to leave early. I'm thinking I'll leave at 7 or 7:30, that way, barring any horrible problems, I'll be there in perfect time.

Thanks!
