Hello! I'm a 31 year old single female, and I just got a job in Cheshire. I visited the town when I was interviewing, and I really liked that it seemed to be a pretty quiet town with lots of trees and grass. (my other option was White Plains, NY - too much concrete). I didn't notice much of a Main St, per se, things looked to be pretty spread out. The housing looked like it varied widely, but I'm hopeful that I can find a house (ideally 2-3 bedroom/ 1-2 bath) with a yard for the dogs. I'm not the partying type, but I would like to find somewhere that I could make some friends as well. I have a boyfriend that will be working at Yale, and we will want to live close (within 15 minutes) to each other. So we would both try to live in between Cheshire and New Haven.

Any suggestions for a place to live that there could be a young-ish crowd (without the undergraduate student feel) and I could get affordable housing (mid 200's for 2/3 bed and yard)

Cheshire really doesn't have a true "down town", just route 10 which is basically a long commercial strip. A house that size with a decent size yard might be a stretch to find in Cheshire and even its neighbor Southington, most people pay that for a condo/town house in those towns. Meriden and Hamden border Cheshire and have more affordable housing options, but these places are considered cities and come with some city-like problems. Look into south Meriden or the Mt. Carmel section of Hamden which do have some nice residential areas.

I would consider Wallingford or North Haven. both are excellent town with pretty much alll the amenties (shopping, reataurants, parks, etc.) plus they have easy access to New Haven and Cheshire. There are homes there in your price range as well. Good luck. Jay

You'll probably find Cheshire to be rather boring. No real town center, typical quiet suburb, nothing to really do in town, and most people living there are your typical SUV driving families with their 2.4 children. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it doesn't sound like what you are looking for (plus I think the housing costs are out of your budget).

I would look into Hamden. It is directly between Cheshire and New Haven. The only part of Hamden I would stay away from is the area around lower Dixwell Ave (near the New Haven city line). It can be dicey down there depending on the neighborhood.

How about living in West Hartford and commuting to Cheshire. Probably no more than 20 miles.
