Hi everybody,
I've been accepted to grad programs in psychology at the University of Hartford and Yale, UMass at Amherst and Wesleyan. I'm leaning very heavily towards Yale. I will be working as well as going to school and was wondering if anyone could recommend some places. I would rather not live in the city and this is what I am looking for in order of importance

1. A smaller town that is close knit with very friendly people and a strong sense of community, opportunities for involvement would be nice
2. I would like a commute of 1 1/2 or less
3. I also don't mind apartments that are a little on the pricey side, my cap is at 1250 a month nor do I need anything that is particularly fancy. A studio or one bedroom with a cozy bed and bookcase is all I need.
4. I would prefer a place that is built around schools, coffee shops, little stores, I would really love a kind of quaint town center, a place that is walkable
5. a safe, peaceful place
6. a town/village with a rich history

Thank you so much everybody for your help! I'm really looking forward to my move.

There are a number of towns that meet you needs that are very close to New Haven. My first thought was Branford or Guilford. These are charming coastal towns that are just east of New Haven. You should be able to find a nice place there in your price range. Shoreline East Commuter Rail service will help make commuting a bit easier.

Another option may be Milford. It is a bit larger suburban town with much of what you are looking for. It has regular trains into New York if you are interested in that. I hope this helps. Jay

Look into Chester, Essex and Deep River. Those towns are the epitome of quaintness with cute small town centers and a sense of community. Your commute to Yale would only be about 45 min. The problem, however, is finding a rental apt. There are no complexes in any of those towns, except for one in Deep River, I think. You will have to look for a private rental on Craigslist for best luck. East Haddam is another choice, though slightly farther. And possibly Prospect or Beacon Falls, but I don't know them well enough.

Milford and Guilford are both nice suburbs convenient to New Haven

Holy cow, that is quite a feat considering Wesleyan does not have a graduate psych program.
