As the fall is coming, we're looking for some neat places to take scenic pictures - and I know there are plenty! We live in West Hartford but would drive up to 20 or 30 minutes for "the good stuff" (and even then, that limitation is only so we can get as much as possible nearby, and then find new treasures further out next year). The *ideal* site would be something accessible by a mild hike suitable for beginners, something not too long (3-4 mile max) and not too difficult. A good example would be Talcott Mountain, which we hiked a bit over a week ago. I would say that the hiking aspect is the most important - fresh air and exercise and all that - but it's a bonus if it's got some good photography sites along the way. Things that I especially enjoy taking pictures of are small bridges, statues, and that kind of "small structure" thing, as well as interesting trees or paths or flowers. Scenery, basically.

I've looked at some trail sites and books and found a couple ideas, but they don't necessarily connect well to how photogenic a given hike is, so I'm hoping I can get some good suggestions this way.

Sessions Woods on the Burlington/Bristol line would be close by, an easy hike and very beautiful.

About 40 minutes away from Hartford is Devil's Hopyard in East Haddam: DEP: Devil's Hopyard State Park The Orange Vista trail delivers a mildly strenuous hike but its not too long. (You don't need to pull yourself up rocks but the climb is steep so you'll work up a sweat.) There is a covered bridge, a small waterfall, and a few streams in the park. Search "Devil's Hopyard" on Flickr to see the kinds of pictures you can get.

That is actually a GREAT website for finding state parks and forests. Using your link I found a map of all the state parks and forests:
