I gave up on finding a rental in Middlebury in my price range and narrowed down my search to Southbury (around Gainfield elementary) and Wolcott (Frisbie elementary). Both are 16 minutes driving for my Husband to go to work, but opposite directions. At 7.30 in the morning is it better to take the 84 from Southbury to the 63 or the 69/84 from Wolcott. Which city is nicer, offers more grocery stores, stores, etc. Which one is safer?

I'd rather live in Southbury. It's a beautiful, well kept town with excellent schools. It has some very nice shopping centers and great restaurants. 84 is probably easier as most of the traffic heads west toward Danbury, and 63/69 can be a pain if you get stuck behind a slow driver. Don't get me wrong, Wolcott is nice too, but it's not as convenient as Southbury IMO.

Keep in mind that these are both smallish townships, certainly not cities. Southbury's population is about 18,600 , Wolcott, 15,500 thereabouts.

Both are safe, very suburban to rural- not much goes on. Wolcott
( pronounced wool-kit ) is pretty much a bedroom community, where you have to drive to anything while Southbury has a better amenity level. If I had to choose, I'd pick Southbury.

Southbury by FAR! I used to drive from Danbury to Watertown everyday and I was so very happy to get off the highway at exit 17 because the hellish traffic would start just before exit 18. Exits 18-25 suck, really suck.
