I'm looking around for a "bad" computer. The biggest and baddest I can find, short of the gamer type stuff.

What would you get if you were buying today?

I'd get an i7 with maybe 8GB of DDD3, an Intel X-25 SSD for boot/apps, a couple of 300GB Veliciraptors (mirrored) for data, and an inexpensive video card (maybe $120) that could run a couple of 30" LCDs.

What EC said.

Although it might be good if there was a price ceiling to shoot for. Otherwise the answer is pretty much going to be "as much as you can spend".

Don't forget that what is a "gaming" rig today is a "web-surfer" a few years from now.

Without a doubt I would build my own with something like:

Antec P182 case
Seasonic or Corsair PS - 650W or so
Gigabyte mobo for Intel i7
8 Gb DDR3
Blu-ray optical drive
Regular DVD optical drive
WD enterprise class drive for O/S and programs
2 x WD or Samsung 750 Gb drives for data, music, photos, and videos (no RAID)
Quietest medium class single video card
Hauppage TV tuner card
(maybe) upgraded audio card

Hmm. I was thinking about a laptop, actually. The one I have is not designed like I like it. It has only one outlet for heat exhaust, which I think is not exactly a good idea. If I can find a very nice gadget to cool it -- maybe some kind of snap-on thing, then it might work. What I'm concerned about is that I'll want a bigger HD than I have now, which is only a 40 gigger. I'll be partitioning it and putting Linux Mint on one partition and WIN on the other. And with bigger processors putting out heat also, that adds to the problem. If the chassis is designed right, then cooling will be less of an issue, though I'll still add on some kind of cooling gadget.

Let me take a look at that and I'll get back to you.

OK, looks good, but if I did go that route, I'd probably have to get somebody to build it for me. I'd still like to have a very nice laptop in case I want to travel. I'm not to hot about having two computers.

Good point. That was kind of in the back of my head, so that's one reason I want to get the biggest and baddest I can get. Be nice if it was upgradeable -- nicer processors down the road or whatever.

Have you had any experience with cooling gadgets?

If money was no object, I'd be looking at Alienware. But that's just me.
