Need a solid laptop... that will last me the next 3-4 years for work/general use/grad school. I don't want to upgrade again. I just had a dell, and both hinges broke off in 1.5 years of light use. Do not want this to happen again. Right now I don't have one, and just using my gfs computer for past 2 months, but that is getting pretty old, I feel the need to have my own computer again.
Seems kind of like a steal, and I don't have to pay for it for 6 months with no interest... so can think about that later.
Or, should I wait until around Black Friday and get a Windows 7 machine, and whichever newer cheaper technologies are out by then. I HATE vista... and this one has it, ahhh.
I would like to get something that is generally future proof.
I can't give you specific information about that computer, but I can tell you that I have had an HP laptop for about 3 years. It has been hauled all over the country and to countless client sites locally. It shows it..... on the outside.
It runs flawlessly and always has. Buy one of those coolers to sit under if you need to.
We bought Mrs Tek a Compaq (Compaq/HP no diff anymore) about a year and a half ago and can report it runs like a champ. Hers has only traveled once on a trip in her car. Other than that it sits in the same place. It's probably not a good test subject.
I have XP, she has Vista.
Vista with the patches (and Windows 7) is not as bad as the original OS. Keep in mind that if you buy a laptop now with Vista you will get a free upgrade to Win 7. Also keep in mind that the odds of buying a laptop and back-stepping to XP are pretty slim. I know, I've tried it. Computer makers are not writing XP drivers for the new equipment.
Edit: Newegg. I have dealt with them on a personal and professional level for years, buying everything from RAM to computers and software. Never had any serious problems. Got mad at them a couple of times, but it got straightened out. You can trust them.
