One of the best things I've done is to bookmark this forum, and I peruse it daily ... well, I'll admit I usually look in more than once a day.

Thanks to all of you I've really learned quite a bit about how computers work (or don't work :-) and it's truly given me a confidence not to panic when something happens.

Last night was one of those times. For some weird reason when we launched our internet homepage (which happens to be Google), it started rapidly multiplying. It maxed out at 15 screens, but if we closed one or more they were replaced by new ones. Using "End Task" on Task Manager had the same result.

But because of this forum and my new-found attitude of "No Need To Panic", I calmly pushed the power button and did a quick shut-down. Yes, the machine ran through the Check Disk thing upon restart and gave me a whole list of truncated files, but no biggie. I did have to use System Restore since a couple of settings puked at the sudden shut down, but again, no biggie.

A truly logical cause of the multiplying is probably an oddity with the hot button we use to launch Google. I wouldn't doubt that there's a ton of cat hair under my keyboard buttons and keys - my lap is a revolving door with cats wanting to help me compute - so it would make sense that the hairs or other crud were keeping the hot button in constant contact to act as if I was holding the button down.

It was quite comical and like a psychedelic trip to watch the Google screens popping up all over each other. It felt great that I wasn't panicking, but was instead laughing.

So, thank you everyone!

If the google screens were coming up with links for expensive canned tuna, your cats may have given you a virus.

Replacement keyboards are everywhere. Grab one of a junker computer or buy a new one before it starts doing other funny stuff, lk rmvng ll th vwls y typ.

Of course the one thing I did not mention in my OP was that I was not the one in the command chair at the time; but being a compassionate spouse I did not verbally admit what I was actually thinking --- pilot error :-)

Once you understand a bit about them they are far less intimidating, the only time I get excited over one is if I see smoke pouring out of it

Yeah, and if your AV makes a loud noise to get your attention, you can just calmly move the cursor to wherever the program suggests. It will take care of things. If something should slip by, it is fixable.
