Tracking technology helps police trace missing laptops abroad.

Imagine if there was a tracker buried deep in your laptop, put there in the motherboard bio during manufacture so it can’t be wiped. CompuTrace One, a tracking solution from Absolute Software, is that, and has helped track 5,000 computers.

I'd rather have it stolen. If you can track where your laptop is when it's stolen, someone can track it when it's not stolen.

Call me paranoid.

While computer theft in itself is an issue... the bigger issue IMO is the data residing on it. Most of these "tracking" devices also utilize the Internet to locate them. Thus, one would never find it offline; giving me all the time I need to extract the data within.. which may be worth thousands times more....

truly.

But, criminals are generally not smart, and laptops are not usually stolen for data theft purposes, but simple cash purposes.
