The original one, Cryptolocker, they were able to obtain the keys from the server but that's just lucky.

The same goes for cloud data. Essentially, if the infected computer can access it, it's likely toast.
I know with the original one it wouldn't jump to networked drive. It had to be local.

The new kid on the block is PolloCrypt. New name, same story. The initial version seems to have screwed up cryptography.

For any kind of malware to affect your computer, it has to get installed there. Preventing it from being installed is the best defense. They try to trick people into installing it. Don't let them.

Not necessarily: Fileless malware runs entirely from memory to make detection harder

I had ransomware pop up on me a few months ago. I didn't touch the mouse or keyboard. I did a hard shutdown and when I restarted, it was gone. I have redundant backups and I also use Acronis True Image, so they can try to steal (ransom) anything they like. I can restore the whole pc, OS an all in under 20 minutes.

The rumor is that a hit man has been hired by a group of victims to go after the ones perpetrating this scam. I have been victimized by one of these scams and my computer has been useless for several days. The phone number associated with the scam that has bugged me is 1-855-584-1733.

No action is required by anyone other than posting the phone numbers of any scammers on a Public message board with the words "payback is a *****" in quotes somewhere in the post. Evidently someone has really pissed a deep pockets victim off enough for him/her to put up a few million bucks to track these guys down. Hell our government won't do it so somebody has to. The next part of the rumor is that the middle fingers of the guilty bastards will be cut off of both hands and sent to the nearest Consulate of the country they reside in after YouTube videos are posted online. So I would assume a search of YouTube with the words "payback is a *****" should produce results in a few weeks.

I doubt if this will happen but hey would it bother me if it did? LOL.
