We work with Microsoft Office Communicator at my job. We show as online, away, be right back, busy, etc. I have observed that if I step away from my computer for longer than 15 minutes, the computer will "shut down" to where I have to re-enter my password, and it will show me as away.
There is a person who shows as away several times a day, and I assume it's because they are stepping away for long periods of time. However, so far today, it has shown away at 8:40, 8:53, and 8:59. So unless their Communicator is set to show as away after only 5 minutes, there must be another explanation, but I can't think of what it could be?
Lync on my computer will show me as "Inactive" after a couple minutes of not doing anything with the computer. It doesn't show me as away unless I am at the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen.
I've seen people so paranoid that they set their password protected screen savers to 1 minute.
The version of Communicator we use at work allows the user to set the status manually. I know a couple of executives that leave the status set to "Busy" all the time.
