I have a fairly old comp, XP, 2.8 CPU, 2 gigs RAM. It can take 2 more gigs of RAM. Will adding more RAM resolve the sound issue or is it likely something else?

It probably can't actually use more RAM. While the MB is probably capable of accepting the sticks, XP is probably 32 bit and won't be able to use it.

Does this happen with all video or just certain ones? Is it just the audio or is the video laggy/choppy too?

Thanks for the response. I just went back to a couple of sites where the situation was noticed in the past, those being YouTube and Morningstar. The problem is not evident just now. The video was always OK but the sound was choppy. I did notice that the sounds cuts out for an instant when scrolling down the page.

Actually 32Bit XP can support up to 4GB. You know that. (Although it will only register as like 3.2 or 3.5 GB).

Adding RAM might help but usually the issue is your internet connection.

Crap, you're right. Been so long since I've seen a 32 bit anything (especially XP), that I'd forgotten that.

But yea, higher resolution videos require more bandwidth, and more CPU to deal with, so it's probably the age of the machine, or the quality of the connection that's the issue.

Try disabling hardware acceleration in the browser, Google "disable hardware acceleration <your browser>".

Old Xp machine ,I'm guessing too many other processes or not enough bandwidth and not memory issues. Launch task manager and see if you are using 2gb of memory or if you CPU is running at 100%

CPU varies between 5% and 19%
Physical memory using prox 1.3 g of 2 g.

I guess it's the connection then?

The bandwidth requirements for video through sites like youtube is relatively low. How fast is your connection supposed to be?

You can test your speed here: Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

You tube is going to require something like 300kbps minimum and the higher quality video I'm not sure but it's probably not more than 2Mbps, if you have 1Mbps you should have no issues at all with Youtube.

Also youtube determines what your bandwidth speed is and automagically adjusts the video, if it's lagging the video will usually pause and buffer. You'll get that swirly thing going indicating it's doing something. Unfortunately you can't easily isolate bandwidth issues by manually lowering the quality of the video because that can mask CPU issues.

Is that when you're not doing anything? Generally speaking it should be 0 if you're not doing anything. A background task using CPU could cause this too.
