Our HP PC crashed last week, lost everything including email addresses. Restored it to it's original settings, now it's almost impossible to use with numerous pop ups blocking internet surfing, for 5 years we've had effortless trouble-free computer service, no pop ups, no viruses, had AVG virus protection and had it installed by the Geek Squad who may have configured it to work better. My question is, if you buy a lap top and run it off a router that is connected through your PC [is there any other way?], is your laptop a totally independent computer, free from the same problems you have with your PC? If the PC crashes, does the laptop still work independently because of the router? Thanks for any help.

Is that through, or to?

I don't see any reason why the laptop wouldn't still work independently, especially if the PC is not switched on, and therefore doesn't have any way of sharing files..

Short answer: yes, the PC should have no bearing on your new laptop operation.

If they are connected to the same router and your computer had a virus that seeks out other computers , then it could infect your laptop. You need to have software on the laptop to protect its self.

Unless your old hard drive physical broke. A professional probably could have recovered your old data. Now that you restored it to originally setup it may be much harder.

HP is garbage. But anyway, your router doesn't have to be connected through your pc. Routers can exist and work independently.
