Yeah, I should get 30 second boots but both my Samsung 840 Pro ssds boot in 90 seconds on my Dell E1705 laptop with XP Media Center and my custom i7 200K desktop with Windows 7 Pro. I'm just happy it's not a 7 minute boot for the laptop and 10 minutes for the desktop anymore.
You have something wrong there, or a ton of crap on boot. 90 seconds is ridiculous amount of time for new computer with SSD. Total boot time for me is about 20 seconds and that includes the bios screen and RAID screen that are on for a few seconds.
When the Windows logo emerges and starts to come together the four windows never even merge. If I'm in sleep mode it's almost like having just the monitor in sleep mode.

Same here.... 35 seconds, including the time it takes my to type my password.
LOL Now, I'm wondering how long it takes my laptop to boot up, because it does seem like a really long time...
Keep in mind that mine is exceptionally fast. I have a 6Gbps SSD on SATA3 on the mobo, startup is slimmed down too. It's custom machine, no crap installed from the vendor.

Nomander is right, it is long debated on both sides of the shutdown or sleep issue. I had one computer for 5 years that I never turned off, just put to sleep at night. It was fine. 90 seconds is fine for boot up if you have a lot of software on it, mine has always taken a minute or so, I run a lot of Adobe graphics software.
I put my computers in standby. I've got an HP pavillion from 2000 that came with Windows ME, upgraded to xp and a dell Laptop that runs xp. I think it was made in about 2003.
I avoid turning them off totally unless I have to or if they locked up somehow, but when they power back up, I go through task manager and stop certain programs that I don't want running. This is unneccessary when I just go into standby mode.

I think the debate is over simply because the cost of the drives have come down so much and reliability has gone up. 15 or 20 years ago it made sense because it was substantial investment.
