Do you have a router? If no, get one. The NAT/PAT (network address translation/port address translation) function of the router blocks all inbound traffic that is not a response to a request sent out.

And by default it protects your computer against all the background noise of bad stuff on the internet.

Security is never absolute (save for never connecting), but yes you should be OK.
