Do you have a router? If no, get one. The NAT/PAT (network address translation/port address translation) function of the router blocks all inbound traffic that is not a response to a request sent out.
And by default it protects your computer against all the background noise of bad stuff on the internet.
I have a MacBook and under Security Settings, there was "Disable remote control infrared receiver", so I checked it.
All that does is turn off the ability to use the apple remote control. Usually a good thing if you have more than one apple computer in your home, and have not paired the remotes with individual computers.
Best thing to do is keep your computer turned off when you are not using it.

<System Preferences><Sharing> turn off all buttons
<System Preferences><Security> turn your fire wall on.
Then go to advanced <enable stealth mode> and <block incoming connections>

Security is never absolute (save for never connecting), but yes you should be OK.
