I have been hit with this twice in the last month and fixed it by rebooting in safe mode and using system restore. Why doesn't my McAfee protection protect against this?

That's a nasty trojan. I don't think McAfee is so great . I would consider Kaspersky or Bitdefender...

There's a very simple reason why it didn't detect it, it was a new variant that wasn't in the signature database. More often than not when I look at an infected computer it is running an up to date AV app. Despite what many people think, your anti virus program is not a guarantee that you won't get infected, it protects you against the stuff it knows about.

This article explains it, it's from 2009 but still relevant Major antivirus engines failing to detect malware | ZDNet

After all these years people still don't understand that their AV software is reactive, sad....

And you are both assuming that the AV is up to date. The OP does not state that it is.

Manually run update in the AV then have it run a scan. It may catch it if they have updated the database.

What You and anyone who is getting hit by malware, especially more than once, should be asking to those who are not getting hit by malware, is what they are doing to prevent/protect themselves.

I'm using nothing special, IE9, MSE, Malwarebytes with realtime monitoring, OpenDNS (an account with custom blocking, not just as DNS), and a good dose of common sense.
