The previous one that is now empty came from the exact same source.

My old HP had a print head (I think that's the right term - it's been a while) that I had to replace. It wasn't part of the cartridge.
You sure it wasn't a canon or an epson. HPs have had the printheads built-in for at least 17 years. Ther HP 500 from 1994 that used 25s & 26s had them built-in.

Most Ebay sellers do not have a return policy, and if they do, it is only 7 or 14 days.
The cartridges were bought as a pair.
The one that is new and never used, is a good two ++ years old.
However, I have used many cartridges that had a "sell by date" of many, many years before.

I'll try to see how, to clean the printer head.
To the left of where the ink cartridge resides, is a reservoir of sorts, that has ink in it.

Ink flows great when the absolute bottom of the cartridge touches hot water. But, doesn't flow in the printer. And unclogging with hot water is a "try first" method in many cases.

I've got a HP deskjet 710 and installed a cartridge that was at least 5 years old, and it works fine.

The Deskjet 300 is needed as a photo copier, not a printer.
I am 1% thinking I did something wrong when I went into the menu and somehow disabled "fax printing." 99% chance that has nothing to do with it.

I tried this with no results:
The cartridge is not seated properly and/or the contacts are dirty. Use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and gently clean both the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the cartridge socket. Allow several minutes to dry and then try again.
The replacement black ink cartridge I received is not - FixYa
