Is this the best 1TB external drive? I think it is... USB 3.0 and self powered... Any other brands like that?
I also got a $15 off Dell coupon to buy it.
That looks like a Seagate from the case design. I have a Toshiba. It gets the job done. Currently $89 on Amazon. WD also makes them. If you catch a killer deal on an internal SATA drive, you can get a USB 3.0 case for it pretty cheap. I got a Masscool off Newegg for $15. The only odd thing about it is that it uses a USB-A (computer side) connector so you'll need to use the cable that came with it. This might be a good think since the USB3.0 Mini connector a lot of drives use can be fussy. The cable is pretty long too.
I prefer WD external drives and we just got two of the 1TB version of the WD Essentials for couple of users and using a USB 3 connection, I ran my backup script and it copied a few gigs under a minute. not sure about the exact time and amount of data because I cancelled it as I was testing the script. It is fast though and I like WD external drives.
I have been using it daily for several months now, never any issues and it seems very fast even when using a USB 2.0 port (I think most USB drives do run a tad faster even using USB 2.0 port on the PC).
Anyhow, pick whichever appeals to you but the one I am using at work is very solid and has a great price.

Since there are so many choices, I find it best to search newegg and amazon, just filter for the type of drive that you want, and then look at the overall reviews by the users. Make sure you read the reviews, some people give negative comments based on shipping time, or some other issue that is not related to the actual products performance.
LaCie is the best brand of external drives. WD is the worse. My previous job had me in charge of roughly 100 external drives. The WD ones all died quickly and corrupted data. LaCie's weren't completely failure free, but they tended to last two+ years and were usually easily recoverable by swapping the drive into a new case.

Well, in general I was looking for the largest USB 3.0 self powered external h.d. Lacie's all have a P.S. That 2TB W.D. from amazon seems to be the best one. I'll probably buy it in Nov.
