Bought a wireless router, new laptop. Router has a port that I plugged the printer into, so as to be able to print wirelessly.

Had to download the software from the net for the printer, no longer have the CD or whatever for it.

I probably did something wrong when doing so. But my printer doesn't work wirelessly. It works if I put the cord into the laptop, but when I try to print on my laptop remotely/wirelessly, it doesn't work.

Any tips?

Router is a:
Printer is a:

Is the port on the printer that you connected to the router an Ethernet (network) port or a USB port or a printer port?

Hope I can answer these questions good enough..

The router is a Netgear, brand new.
The printer is an Epson, I would guess maybe 4 years old.

The router has a USB port, which is what I plugged in for the printer.

Does the router have just two ports? One for Ethernet and one for USB?

First, are you sure that the USB port on the router is for a printer and not a hard drive? What you're trying to do is use the Netgear router as a print server for the printer. One key step is to add a port to Windows that represents the USB port on the router. How this is done varies by print server (the router in your case) make and model.

From there, it depends on the flexibility of your printer's drivers. If they're not very flexible can't be tricked into using anything other than a physical, local, USB port, then you're probably not going to get it to work through the router. Sometimes you can get the printer to work, but not the scanner if its an all-in-one device. If that winds up being the case, you can get a printer with its own print server built in so it can connect to the router via Ethernet cable or wifi and then it'll work.

All of this sounds way beyond my capability to navigate through.

Beginning to wonder at this point if I'd be better off to just go spend the $$$ to buy a wireless printer and go with that instead.

The specs for your router say the USB port us for adding external storage. That's probably not going to work with your printer.
