I will be leaving the country for 90 days and the only internet access I will have will be thru my employer. I like to download music and movies using bitorrent and various torrent sites. What I need to know is if my employer can see what I am downloading and sharing if I hook up thru their network. Now to be clear I will NOT be going to any websites on their network as I can get a decent wireless signal from a nearby cafe. I need the work network in order to download anything as the wireless signal I can get will not download or share anything with any sort of speed. Will my employer be able to see what bitorrent is seeding and leeching and will they be able to see a list of the websites I have been to even if I never search the web on their network?
Thanks for any assistance.

If your company is big enough to have an international presence, it is safe to assume that the IT department can track every place you visit on the Internet using their network. Whether they do track anything is a question I cannot answer.

That's on the Internet. There's a lot more to the Internet than the World Wide Web. Yes, they can see it. Where I work, torrents are not allowed based on high bandwidth usage. My assumption is that torrents are being watched.

Yes of course they can see what files you are downloading. Wether or not they will actually find out all depends on how their IT deparment monitors you or doesent monitor you

One post is more than sufficient, crossposting is against the TOS I believe.

If you work for a company that does not block all P2P traffic, they are fools.

FWIW, even with only 9 employees at work, we have a firewall and all activity can be tracked. So yes, it is very possible to see what you download/seed/etc.

Just to add a bit of info.

If you have a torrent program installed on your work PC you are most likely already in violation of the company computer use policy. Most IT departments will utilize applications that monitor applications/files on your computer. Even if you illegally download movies/music off the company network but using their laptop the company can (and some have) be held accountable for not preventing the ability. Even having legal music/movies on your work laptop that are not approved can leave them vulnerable to fines (which they won’t thank you for).

Regarding P2P/Internet traffic, most companies will have P2P/ Torrent traffic blocked from leaving the network, it will also be logged. Illegally downloading music/movies from the company network leaves the company liable for a lot of lawsuits/bad-press/etc. I had worked at one place that didn’t block the traffic but logged it and would use the logs to terminate the employee. Either way you are putting yourself in jeopardy of being fired, demoted, etc.

Your work computer is just that, a work computer and should not be used for anything other than that. Companies will allow a certain level of personal use (each company differs) but music/movies/torrents/porn/etc all should be left to a non-work computer.
