My husband and I are considering buying a house on the far eastern border of Westgate. We've found plenty of sources saying that Westgate has a low crime rate, but we are very concerned about the neighborhoods just a couple of blocks/streets east. Westgate seems like a great community, but seeing these stats, and knowing that the Neighbors Association maintains active block watches, and finding a "gang map" that says these neighborhoods are within various gangs' territories, we are becoming very concerned.

Would you feel safe with your wife or child living in this area?
How much is the crime in surrounding neighborhoods felt in Westgate?
Is the park safe?
What types of crimes have you heard about? Break-ins? Assault? Gun violence?
We've heard Hilltop isn't safe, yet Westgate supposedly is, yet it seems to be within the borders of Hilltop. How is this true or false?

Thank you for your candor!

Hilltop is comprised of lots of sub-neighborhoods. When people talk about it not being safe they're referring to the area east of Hague south of W Broad down to around Sullivant or so, but since most people don't know the various Hilltop neighborhoods they just give it a bad rap not deserved in some parts. Westgate is a square chunk of Hilltop from Demorest to Hague west-east and Broad to Sullivant north-south. I'd keep a buffer at least a few blocks west of Hague around Binns Blvd which is a nice area. Basically just need to watch out for petty theft. Seems there were quite a few younger families moving in over there. There's a popular restaurant bar that finally opened up on W Broad which had otherwise been a dead zone: in the boring sense, not the homicide one.

Westgate "proper" WEST of Hague / South of Broad = for the most part VERY safe. I've house & dog sat over there and it's super quiet, very peaceful, very safe. Lot of after-dark dog walkers and absolutely no riff-raff on the streets of Westgate Park.

The crimes I have heard about:
* Daytime break-ins when nobody's home
AND
* copper thefts from vacant homes.

But that's everywhere in Columbus. If you don't spend $20 on a security system and/or secure your home? It's your fault when something goes wrong.

In Columbus, crime is as segregated as the people are.

You can live on a safe street 2-5 blocks from a high crime area and rarely if ever realize a problem on your own immediate block. Bexley's a perfect example of this pattern.

I have noticed some sketchy looking blocks in Eastern Westgate / close to Hague ... I can't say 100% if those areas are safe or just run down. Many times, sketchy looking areas just need 1-2 dedicated residents anonymously calling the police 2-3 times per day to rat out the crooks who bring the area down.

Wide thoroughfares, railroad tracks & expressways are often the "electric fences" separating areas of Columbus.

I wouldn't live there. I would look farther south to the Big Run area - Georgesville/Clime/Alkaire. You can get a decent size house for your money out there. Not as much crime.

Default Love westgate

I am a single female who has lived in Westgate for over 7 years and love it. I would avoid the streets right at the edge of the neighborhood and would suggest an alarm system and some common sense, but I have never had a problem except for my car windshield being smashed once. That could happen anywhere. This community is full of friendly people/families who are always outside walking dogs or enjoying the day. They care about eachother and their houses. Yes, the surrounding area isn't great and there aren't a lot of trendy businesses around yet, but we are a convenient drive to everywhere and we have a Dirty Franks now , a helpful little hardware and a beautiful park. I would highly recommend this neighborhood to anyone who wants a nice older, well built home for a reasonable price in a place with a strong sense of community.

Hello,

I am currently looking in Westgate and I am looking for a general synopsis. I was wondering if you had any updates, if you moved there or any other information would be great. Thanks!

May I bump this old thread?

I am seeing a house in the Westgate area this afternoon. Based on this thread, it's not in Westgate proper however. It is on S Roys Ave - southeast to Westgate park, near Bishop Ready.

Is anyone able to describe this area as far as safety is concerned?
