Well, it's time to report what is going to happen regarding the fire season this year. And sadly, this thread is going to see a lot of activity.

Am watching Denver's Fox31 and they are announcing a red flag warning for a good portion of western Colorado for today. Mesa County was pretty breezy for a good part of yesterday afternoon.

Sign of things to come -- small(ish) fire just west of Buena Vista yesterday. I think it was around 30 acres and there were some mandatory evacuations. Strong winds in the area made it harder to fight. Fire 60% contained as of this morning, and the evacuations were cancelled.

KKCO-News11 is reporting a major fire that is threatening several homes in the Redlands area of Grand Junction. It apparently started two hours ago. The exact vicinity is D Road and Monument Road, close to the Colorado River.

Earlier this afternoon Mesa County announced a no burn ban. Am not surprised that this is going on, the winds howled through the Fruita/Loma area, with steady 35-40 mile an hour winds. We've had a bad year for moisture and the 7-10 day forecast doesn't show anything coming in for rain/snow.

We've already had dozens of fires in El Paso County. Yesterday there was one just south of Falcon that required evacuations. Haven't checked on its status yet this morning. A few weeks ago, a fire started on Fort Carson spread south and burned down some homes and also required evacuation. There have been other smaller ones. We also had a devastating residential fire that made 65 people homeless that was perhaps exacerbated by the dry conditions.

We had an usually dry and warm winter out here in the Four Corners and so far it's been a dry warm spring, as well. Some idiot from the BLM decided to do a controlled burn just west of town in McElmo Canyon despite the fact that a red flag warning was in effect. Naturally the fire got out of hand and "control burned" a few hundred more acres than it was supposed to.

The lack of rain day after day is beginning to feel a little scary. April is usually a good month for rain out here and the month has only just begun, but the forecast for the next 10 days holds out little hope for precipitation. So far, this has all the makings for a bad fire year in the San Juans and the La Platas. Not good. Not good at all.

More out of control "control burns" in Delta and Montrose counties that I could count. Fire departments very busy.

I was sad to see this in my news feed recently:

https://www.denverpost.com/2018/03/2...p-castle-fire/

Bishop's Castle is amazing. Luckily the castle itself was not damaged, but the cabin and gift shop were a total loss. They are going to rebuild (of course!) I've feared in past fires that Bishop's Castle could wind up in peril, and it's such a cool place, and such a lifetime achievement of hard work for Mr. Bishop, it would be truly tragic if it were destroyed.

EDIT: Maybe this is inappropriate to put here, this fire was evidently due to electrical wiring and I did not originally realize that. But they are lucky they got it out before it got into the trees, though! And I know there was a fire...what, last year?...that had me fussing over the Castle.

Yes, there was another fire on Fort Carson last night. As a nearby resident, I am angry with their policies. They keep doing their bombing and artillery practice in dangerous conditions and high winds, etc. They could easily cause the loss of more homes or even destroy Cheyenne Mountain State Park, etc. The deadliest fire in Colorado Springs history started on Fort Carson and got far enough to threaten the Broadmoor. It could happen again.
