I cannot find any information on whether or not the tinted license plate cover / holders are illegal in Colorado.

edit: They're illegal.

Correct. They're illegal. Enforcement not strict, however.

I've noticed enforcement of pretty much anything related to plates here is veryyy loose. On a daily basis I see plates that are 2-4 months expired, a couple weeks ago I saw a plate expired 08/14.

Plates are also frequently covered up with dirty snow crud for long periods of time

What about not having a front plate? Do they enforce that?

Not so much if the vehicle is not manufactured to display one, for example most Corvettes and a few European imports. However, if you've got a Chevy Malibu, get pulled over and there's a bracket without a plate, count on a ticket.

It's enforced in Denver. Not sure about other places in Colorado.

Law enforcement generally doesn't go out of its way to look for it, but it they notice it, you will get stopped. You will generally have to go to the County Clerk's office and get replacement plates if you do not have the front license plate in your possession.

Seems you're also more likely to have it noted on a parking ticket than a traffic ticket - my brother-in-law got one on a parking ticket. I'm surprised they're not all over this so it can raise money. I'll bet Mountain View enforces it!

I never pay much attention to my front plate and once the damn thing came off (or was taken) without my noticing it. The Highway Patrol stopped me and gave me a ticket for no front plate, plus I had to go down and get a set of brand new plates because I never did discover where my old front plate had gone off to - probably it's sitting halfwy down that shale slide on Ophir Pass.
