Can't grade what you can't read. It may have been illegible to her.

When you talk to her, don't get an attitude. Go in there and act like you are sorry for the bad handwriting. The chance of getting something fixed is much higher if you go in and show respect (whether you like her or not)

I tell my kids that all the time. If I can't read it, I can't grade it. I grade 4 or 5 classes of essays. Why should I struggle? You are writing one paper and presenting it well is a form of communication, is it not? Ask if you can type it and re-submit.

The English teacher next door to me offers extra credit if her students type their work. Maybe that can be something you can suggest and in the future turn everything in that way. Just be apologetic and it should be fine.

Is your bad handwriting chronic - as it it never improves even with trying? Maybe you can talk about getting some help improving your handwriting? Or was it bad just due to rushing and/or laziness. If it is chronically bad you may have an issue with it, and you may need to get evaluated and be allowed to use a keyboard in the classroom.

Although you still need to write numbers and stuff in math tests, etc. so practicing handwriting never hurts at any age.

I have a child who has a handwriting disability. I have it on the IEP that he can NEVER be graded against due to the messiness of his handwriting, if they need to know what it says, they can sit down with him and ask him - he will tell them. He gets to use a keyboard when necessary.

I was a teaching assistant when getting my Master's. I routinely didn't give full credit for handwriting that was hard to read. Having to grade so many papers and homeworks, I didn't have the time to decipher what the chicken scratch on the paper said. If the test/work meant that much too him/her they would make sure I could grade it.

At my university, handwriting so poor as to be illegible or nearly illegible can be perceived as an attempt to violate the honor and integrity code (an attempt to disguise the fact that someone else wrote your paper or test, or that you copied). You could not only receive a lower grade, you could end up with far worse punishment (removal from the class, academic probation, expulsion).

Improve your handwriting and this will never be an issue. Get a tutor. Remember, in the 'real world', you don't get graded. Everything is pass or fail. If your boss can't read your handwriting, you won't get partial credit, your work will simply be rejected. So you are going to have to fix your handwriting problem sooner or later. You can do it now and get better grades, or you can do it later after your academic performance has suffered already.

Well, it is a communications class. But I would still argue if it meant a test grade.
