It won’t finish with the nation’s highest-rated recruiting class, but the University of Mississippi generated more buzz for its football program on Wednesday than it had in years because of its stunning success on National Signing Day.
Second-year coach Hugh Freeze and his staff brought in the greatest recruiting class in school history, much to the amazement of celebrities, media members and college football fans.
NBA star LeBron James gave Ole Miss credit in a tweet, former professional baseball player Jose Canseco defended the school’s credibility, while outlets as unlikely as Fox News and Esquire devoted attention to Ole Miss.
During ESPNU’s live coverage of National Signing Day, Ole Miss was easily the most mentioned school. It was so frequent that many joked on social media networks that ESPNU should be renamed the “Ole Miss Network.” Other ESPN programs, such as “Around the Horn” and “Pardon the Interruption,” prominently discussed the Rebels.
“I don’t think that you could go out and purchase the exposure that we got today,” said Freeze, who coached the Rebels to a 7-6 record during the 2012 season. “It’s unbelievable. It’s still ongoing but as I sat there early, from 6:30 to 10, it seemed like Ole Miss was popping up on the screen quite a lot.”
Ole Miss signed 23 high school players to binding scholarship papers on Wednesday. As a group, the class is ranked No. 2, No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9 nationally by the four most-recognized online recruiting services that analyze football talent. For the first time since Internet services began ranking players in the late 1990s, Ole Miss landed four five-star prospects — the absolute best of the best football recruits. The Rebels signed the nation’s top-rated defensive lineman, the nation’s top-ranked offensive lineman and the nation’s top-ranked wide receiver.
I gotta hand it to him, great job. Of course the only direction they could go after Houston Nutt is up.
