FIRST.... as in, I was the first to point this out. I KNEW IT! As soon as I saw the WAC was only going to have like 5 schools in football after this year, that was it.
Only thing I had wrong was the date. A year off...
^ lol. Please let me know where the cemetery is so I can lay flowers and reminisce about the glorious WAC.
Joking aside, the modern WAC did have some teams that made some noise nationally. Boise State winning two BCS games including the dramatic win over Oklahoma in 06. They have consistently been ranked high and if it weren't for a couple real tough losses they may played in another couple BCS games or the NC game. Hawaii with Colt Brennan had an undefeated regular season (beating Boise State) and playing in the Sugar Bowl in 07. Fresno State has had some success and big wins (and close exciting losses) against BCS team. They took a loaded USC team (that played in the NC game) down to wire in 2005. Nevada had a great season in 2010 only losing one game (to Hawaii on the road) and finally beating Boise. They beat Cal handily 52-31 that same year.
The WAC has taken a lot of jabs over the years but it was really a two-tiered conference. There was good football being played (as pointed out above) but the bottom-half of the league really held it down. San Jose State, New Mexico State, Utah State, and Idaho have had little success over recent times and that really dragged the conference down.
RIP...gone are the days of an almost guaranteed over.
