is it too cold in may to play on the beach and get in the water in nags head? trying to figure out next year's may beach trip already. it would be the end of may, the week before memorial weekend. we have young children and we're wondering if the outer banks is a good choice for that time of year??!?!

The water may be cool, but not so cool the kids will care.
The weather can be quite variable, and feel cool with prevailing winds.
We have been there 4th of July week and never seen 80 degrees.
If the wind slows or quits, it will be warm.
Rental prices should be off-season and discounted.

We play on the beach in January! For the 'in the water'....my daugther normally is in the water by the end of March. LOL...May is not even early! (Yes, March is too cold for me...but she doesn't care.)

Our first year out of Yankeeville, we played in the surf on New Year's Day.
Since then, this beautiful climate has spoiled us, and it feels like winter will never end....

We were at the beach New Year's Eve....but no playing in the surf!!
May is anyone's guess. Could be gorgeous and hot or rainy and cold. My bet would be that the water would be cold but tolerable is you are under 20 years old... IMO, September is a better "off season" bet.
