Hello, I live in the Chicago area and I am trying to plan a family trip to Emerald Isle. Trying to decide if we should drive or fly. Can anyone tell me the best airport to arrive in from Chicago to get to Emeral Isle the quickest?
Thanks!
Jeanene

Probably RDU in Raleigh
then it will be a 2 1/2 - 3 hr drive to Emerald Isle

.......unless you have a private jet you could land at the airport in Beaufort then drive 1 hour west to EI.

You can fly into New Bern. I preferred Raleigh because I don't like those commuter planes but if that doesn't bother you fly into New Bern.

Depends if money is no object or not really one. Raleigh (RDU) is probably your best economical bet. However, you'll be driving 3 hours from RDU to Emerald Island. Depending on if you are driving a gas guzzler or not, be prepared to add about 176 miles worth of gas in either direction on that drive (176miles/15mpg = 11.73 gallons x $3.05 = $35.78 x 2 [there and back] = $71.56). I imagine you're already renting a car, so that doesn't factor unless you can get a better deal in RDU since, I imagine, there will be more options.

If you want to fly all the way, then you're looking at, yes, New Bern (Craven County Regional Airport). It's about 42 miles from Emerald Island.

Also, you can also fly into Wilmington's airport (Wilmington International Airport) which is about 80 miles from Emerald Island.

Me, I'd go with RDU due to costs and, besides, I don't mind the drive through the areas I've never been. Oh, and factor that into the drive time. 3 hours could easily turn into five if you decide to stop frequently.

Jacksonville NC has a small airport and you can fly a small plane inot there..more pricey though and then you can drive to Emerald Isle via Swansboro...

I live in Morehead City. I have flown into RDU and New Bern more times than I can remember.
New Bern Regional Airport had only one airline-US Airways. Last month they added Delta!
My personal choice would be to fly into New Bern. Smaller-Less crowded (no lines or waiting) and much closer to Emerald Isle- By about 110 miles.
