Not good news for that shopping center to lose not only Save-A-Lot, but also Kmart within months of each other.

If Save-A-Lot couldn't make it there, I'm not too sure a Publix would do much better. There also used to be a Piggly Wiggly on Berkeley Blvd. many years ago. That corridor doesn't seem to do too well with grocery stores for some reason.

Personally, I'd like to see Best Buy take Kmart's spot. As I've said before, Goldsboro hasn't had a major electronics store since Rex closed and RadioShack is now gone. Given Kmart's location near US-70 and Seymour Johnson AFB, I think Best Buy would do really good business there.

Food Lion on Ash Street isn't that far from Kmart anyway and Wayne Memorial Drive seems to be the hotspot for grocery stores with Harris Teeter and now Lidl on it's way there.

Out of 41 stores Publix has announced for North Carolina, 19 stores are open.

I can see Publix coming to Goldsboro. Any new store being announced now is projected to open in 2018.

No idea. I still keep in touch with a friend of mine that lives just outside of Goldsboro and he hasn't heard anything about it.

The Flying Shamrock will stay open after all. It has been sold.

Goldsboro News-Argus | News: Shamrock to stay open

Quote:
A little bit of nostalgia and an interest in keeping a successful downtown business alive led Chris Yones to enter into a purchase agreement to buy The Flying Shamrock Irish Pub and Restaurant.

The Flying Shamrock, originally planned to close this week, will remain open, with the new owner taking over the reins in February.

Yones, a Goldsboro resident who retired from the Air Force in 2013, reached a purchase agreement with co-owner Wayne Turner on Wednesday.

The Flying Shamrock will keep its name, menu, trivia nights and overall business model. The future owner also plans to learn about the annual St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraisers, with an interest in continuing the tradition.

Yones first talked with Turner about buying the business 18 months ago but the purchase price wasn't workable, he said.

More recently when he learned about the pending closing, he resumed negotiations.

Turner will continue to own the business until a tentative date of Feb. 14. Yones is waiting to receive his Alcoholic Beverage Control permit before taking complete ownership.

If there is a delay in receiving the ABC permit, the business may close for about a week, he said.

A comedy show once a month may be added, and new Diamond professional-grade pool tables will replace the two currently inside the business.

During the next year, an expansion may take place into the second floor where four more Diamond pool tables could be added.

The retired Air Force staff sergeant was part of the weapons troop of the 336th Aircraft Maintenance Unit within the 4th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

He is also working with his father, who has owned a bar for more than 30 years. Yones more recently worked as a business analyst. His main focus is on operating the business.

The Flying Shamrock, at 115 N. John St., has been open in Goldsboro since 2007.

I'm glad the Flying Shamrock isn't closing. I have a friend who works there. I'm not as into going out to bars as I used to be, but I do visit the Shamrock a couple of times a month, if only for an hour or so. It's a pretty cool place. I like Torero's too...strong, cheap drinks.

Cosplay will be on hand, with locals and visitors dressing up in their favorite costume and competing in a Saturday contest.

The Carolina Games Summit, an annual event that can typically draw nearly 2,000 people, will be held Saturday and Sunday at several downtown locations.

Tickets, at $20 for the entire weekend, can be purchased at the Wayne National Building, at 139 W. Walnut St., or at the Paramount Theatre, 139 S. The summit will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some events will last later, including a Tespa meetup from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Ed's Southern Food and Spirits. To get in, a university identification is required.

Also on Saturday, an afterparty will be held at the Arts Council of Wayne County 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and a Carolina Games Summit meetup will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Goldsboro Brew Works, for adults age 21 and older.

The two-day event will have more than 20 gaming tournaments and more than 20 speakers, including two keynote speakers.

On Saturday, the keynote address, "Using Games to Cure Cancer," will be presented by Dr. Benjamin Sintay, chief physicist in the radiation oncology department at the Cone Health Cancer Center.

On Sunday, the keynote address, "A Study of Creature Animation in Films and Games," will be given by Jalil Sadool, co-founder and chief executive officer of Steamroller Studios. Sadool was a lead animator for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "How to Train Your Dragon 2."

Three bands will perform at the Paramount Theatre, including the Triforce Quartet, Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m., and SkyBlew, 4:30 to 5 p.m.,and Eight Bit Disaster, 5 to 6 p.m., on Sunday.

Carolina Games Summit activities will take place at multiple downtown locations that also include the ACME Theater, Top Hat Ballroom, The Laughing Owl, Terrace Room, Off Center Pizza, Jay's Sushi and Burger Bar and Torero's Mexican Restaurant.

Exhibition booths, educational sessions, trading card games as well as free-play gaming opportunities on consoles, computers and arcades will be available. A mobile gaming lounge will be set up outside the Terrace Room.

This year's cosplay contest will be Saturday night, with judging starting at 6 p.m., at the ACME Theater. Registration for the contest is at the FanDames booth inside the Wayne National Building exhibition hall.

Some of this year's plans involve participation from Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft studio, Spark Plug Games and Dark Unicorn Games. Blue Ox Games will also host card tournaments.

The Carolina Games Summit started in Goldsboro in 2006 and was held annually at Wayne Community College through 2013. The event has been in Raleigh and Durham in recent years. Local efforts were made to bring the two-day event back to the city.

The summit is already booked for the downtown area during the first weekend in February next year.

New Wayne County base will help UNC Health Care ferry heart patients :: WRAL.com

Quote:
A new base for one of UNC Health Care's Carolina Air Care helicopters fits into a larger plan to connect patients in rural North Carolina with the UNC system's new heart and vascular hospital in Raleigh, according to a spokesman for the hospital system.

UNC has based one of its three Carolina Air Care helicopters in temporary space at the Wayne Executive Jetport since October. The Council of State, a 10-member panel chaired by Gov. Roy Cooper, is expected to sign off Tuesday on a lease for a permanent hangar space at the airport for the helicopter and a traditional ambulance.

So, in addition to answering calls for emergency services, the helicopter and ambulance based in Wayne County will bring patients who need specialized treatments from Wayne Memorial in Goldsboro, Nash Health in Rocky Mount, Johnston Health in Smithfield and Clayton and Wilson Health to an about-to-open heart and vascular hospital in Raleigh. The new North Carolina Heart and Vascular Hospital is opening at the main Raleigh campus of UNC REX Healthcare in March.

UNC added Wayne Memorial Hospital to its network in 2015. Health systems run by the likes of UNC and Duke University are reaching out from their urban bases through affiliation agreements into rural areas. While those affiliations allow UNC to beef up the capability of rural hospitals, Wolf said that there is some specialty care that is available only in a few places.

"If it's a service or something that can't be done out at Wayne Memorial, we want to make it as easy as possible for patients to get here," Wolf said.

The new permanent air transport hangar and crew space is expected to be available for use by October.

Goldsboro News-Argus | News: City to discuss Herman Park Center

Quote:
The Goldsboro City Council will consider selecting design plans for a new Herman Park Recreation Center and review several financing agreements during its meeting Monday.

The council will meet at 5 p.m. for a work session in the City Hall annex conference room at 200 N. Center St., and at 7 p.m. for its regular meeting in City Hall at 214 N. Center St.

Design plans for a new 62,000-square-foot Herman Park Center on Ash Street will be considered for approval by the council, which held off on a decision in January until the plans could be more carefully reviewed.

The center is proposed to include a 20,000-square-foot gymnasium, with a second-floor walking track, a 9,000-square-foot gymnasium and rooms for multi-purpose uses, fitness and different age groups, including adults and youth. Locker rooms and outdoor recreation areas also being considered, including areas for basketball, racquetball courts, cornhole and shuffleboard and a climbing wall for children.

The design plans were created by HH Architecture, which is developing the future Maxwell Regional Agricultural and Convention Center. The architectural firm is tasked with providing the council with final project cost estimates. The council has not voted to build a new recreation center, but a decision is anticipated sometime this year.

Also during the meeting, the council will seek state approval, through the N.C. Local Government Commission, to enter into a $3 million, 15-year loan agreement with Wayne County for construction of a new multisport complex on Oak Forest Road.

In other business, the council will consider:

* Spending $9,500 for advertising services to promote the 2017 Wings Over Wayne Air Show, along with Wayne County support of $9,500. Advertising services will be paid for through the city's unassigned fund balance, Scott said.

* Paying $25,000 to move two no-cost modular units from Wayne UNC Health Care, unassigned fund balance will also be used. One modular unit will be added to the public works department and the other will be located at Goldsboro Fire Station 4.

* A conditional-use permit for an internet sweepstakes business at the Southeast Plaza Center, on N.C. 111 South. The business plans to operate Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. Thirty gaming machines are planned inside the 3,600-square-foot building that will occupy two tenant spaces.

* Conditional-use permit on the southwest corner of U.S. 117 South and Neuse Circle for the operation of a used car lot.

* A Brookwood preliminary subdivision plan that divides one property into four lots along Hillcrest Place.

* A site landscape plan for a 4-acre site on Gateway Drive where an expanded parking lot is planned for the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram dealership.

* A parking lot expansion for Mission Foods, at 401 Gateway Drive.

*Appointments to city boards and commissions.
