After years of problems, still no long-term plan
The temporary bridge spanning a new inlet cut through Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge by Hurricane Irene on Aug. 27 is now projected to be ready for traffic around Oct. 15.

That will be good news for Hatteras Island residents, who have been cut off from the rest of the county for more than a month.

Ferry service from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe has been the only access to the island, while the bridge is being installed and about seven miles of NC 12 is being repaired.

The use of the term "temporary" is because the North Carolina Department of Transportation has "accelerated" plans to identify a more permanent solution, said Hollie Allen, a DOT spokesperson.
