Have friends visiting from the land-locked midwest. We'd like to have a typical touristy trip to the beach - a day's trip - where we can browse through cute shops and grab a quick lunch before heading back home (2.5 hour drive). We'll probably go on Friday. I know it's the height of the season and parking will be a bear. How about if we arrive there really early in the AM? Is parking by the hour, the day or?

We've been to Wrightsville Beach, but to the beach itself and it was in off season so not much else was open around there. Is it still a good place to go and make like the tourists that the locals can't wait to get rid of?

TIA for any suggestions.

Exactly--hard to say what a "day's trip" is if we don't know where you are now (it's not in your profile). Pretty much any beach in NC would do the trick, I think.

Doesn't matter, really. We're open to any, as long as there is something besides a beach. We're not going to sit and bake.

Just a collection of interesting shops to browse, buy souvenirs, t-shirts, whatever, would do.

Touristy...South Port. You can then take the ferry from there to Ft. Fisher & visit the aquarium and see the Ft. Then head down to Carolina Beach and the Boardwalk.

You may want to consider the Beaufort water front. It has some cute shops, antique stores, and quite a few restaurants.

If you are interested in spending a little time on the beach and hanging out with the wild horsies, you can take a water taxi to Shackleford Banks.

We were disappointed in Carolina Beach. Will never intentionally go there again. Way to commercial for me.

We will try Beaufort waterfront area that Toonces07 recommends. Sounds nice.

Having spent quite a lot of time in Ogunquit ME and along that coast...well, what can I say? Carolina Beach just didn't doesn't measure up to what we were looking for. I'm sure we'll find some nice spots along the NC coast; it just means spending time exploring. We will try to get to the Outer Banks when fall comes.

I appreciate everyone's responses. Thank you.
