Hi all-
My brother lives in Wilmington and has no dental insurance. He was laid off his job and works odd jobs to support his family. He an his wife work but make "too much" for Medicaid, and have no extra money for dental care. He really needs extractions so that he can go on and get dentures. His teeth are breaking off and he is in constant pain.
Can anyone recommend where he may go to get help? Many thanks in advance.

If your brother doesn't qualify for medicaid then he's obviously making enough money to afford dental insurance. My dental insurance is $39 a month with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NC.

Ditto! There's no place here in Wilmington you can go for help without the bucks to pay for it!

its not just wilmington, dental care is expensive ANYWHERE and sadly, dental insurance really only covers the basics. Now, if its just an extraction or a filling your brother needs, then insurance would do the trick. if its much more than that, its going to cost.

perhaps call the health department. they may have an occasional clinic or something, or point you in the right direction.

Geez people, I'm sure Kimmie did not come here to be lectured as to what her brother can and cannot afford.

Here are two possible sources for you:

North Carolina Dental Society - Schedule (looks like the next clinic to be offered is in Raleigh on Aug 12 & 13-- there are no more clinics set for Wilmington this year.)

Cape Fear Clinic, Inc (in Wilmington)

PS. I would also suggest following Sue's suggestion and have him contact the Health Department.

Best of luck to your brother and I hope he has success in finding a permanent job.

Maybe he could talk to dentists and see if one would work out a payment plan.

Thank you all sl much for the thoughtful replies. We will check in to some of those places. May also consider pooling our money and sending hom to South America to have it done cheaper. All his teeth need to come out and he needs dentures. I think we are beyond veneers and crowns.

Before he goes all the way to South America, try the NC Dental School in Chapel Hill. Probably a better risk - hope he can get some help for this - very sad that this is happening.

UNC School of Dentistry

Dental Works will work with you to get the care you need. They have 2 locations in Wilmington.

Wilmington dentist: your intelligent alternative to dental care as usual.
